The biggest incentives to work at retirement age are to earn extra income and to feel useful.
About one in four retirees who have moved out of work is still interested in working in addition to retirement, according to a report by the pension institution Keva. Geographically, the greatest interest in working in addition to pensions is in Central Finland and Kainuu, where one third of pensioners are interested.
Retirees who are interested in working are kept out of the job, for example, because no suitable job has been found.
“We seem to have a lot of experts among seniors who would be interested in some kind of job. I am absolutely certain that hitting the right job opportunities could get a large number of people to work alongside retirement, ”Keva’s leading expert Ismo Kainulainen says in a press release.
For the survey responded to more than 2,000 retirees. According to the survey results, one in ten retirees still works regularly in addition to retirement. One-fifth of respondents are occasionally working pensioners.

The greater part however, according to the survey, more than 70% of pensioners have left work altogether. For them, the main reason for not working is the freedom that comes with retirement. Health reasons, spending time with family or participating in voluntary work, for example, are also common reasons for opting out of paid work.
A survey commissioned by Keva was conducted by Kantar TNS in September. The margin of error is 1.5 percentage points in its direction.
