Romania’s Constitutional Court has ordered the recount of all ballot papers cast in the first round of last Sunday’s presidential election. At the same time, the court rejected one of two requests to cancel this election. The application was submitted later than the permitted deadline. The Constitutional Court announced this on its homepage. The next court date was scheduled for Friday.
Two candidates who were defeated in the first round had requested that the election be annulled on the grounds that the first-placed pro-Russian right-wing extremist Calin Georgescu did not disclose the financial sources for his election campaign and also received money from abroad. Both offenses would violate Romanian law.
Georgescu came first in the first round with 22.94 percent of the vote, followed by the conservative-liberal politician Elena Lasconi with 19.17 percent. The decisive runoff election between the two is scheduled for December 8th. The parliamentary elections will also take place in Romania on December 1st.
Georgescu had told the central electoral authority that he had run his campaign with “zero” funding. He primarily advertised himself on the Internet platform Tiktok. Many experts pointed out that such an online campaign would not be possible without significant financial resources. Several Romanian influencers said they were paid to promote Georgescu.
