A price similar to these 6.75-6.74 euros per liter for own-brand extra virgin olive oils has not occurred since August 2023, when it was sold at 6.79 euros in Carrefour, and at 6.80 euros in Mercadona. and Eroski. The highest price for these products was recorded between February and May 2024, when it reached 9.90-9.89 euros per liter.
In Alcampo, Dia and Hipercor the price reductions of their own brands have not been so significantaccording to Facua. The Alcampo extra virgin has gone from 9.11 at the beginning of October to 8.19 euros currently, while the Almazara del Olivar de Dia brand has registered an almost identical variation (from 9.11 to 8.20 euros).

Facua has carried out a comparative study in which it has taken into account thirty prices for sale in six large distribution chains in the country, analyzing brands such as Coosur, Carbonell, Dcoop, Oleoestepa, Ybarra, Koipe or Jaencoopin addition to others typical of supermarkets such as Hacendado, El Corte Inglés or Carrefour.
The average price of a liter of extra virgin was from 12.57 euros in November 2023, while it currently stands at 11.47 euros. Therefore, there has been a year-on-year decrease of 8.7% (1.10 euros per liter).
It must be taken into account that the VAT on this product was 5% a year ago. In July 2024 it went to 0% while as of October 1 it rose to 2%, a percentage that will remain until the end of the year.
As of January 1, 2025, a super-reduced VAT of 4% will be definitively established as it is considered an essential product.
At origin it has dropped €1.58/l in one year
According to the data offered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the liter of extra virgin was paid at origin to 5.55 euros euros before taxes between November 11 and 17, 2024.
The previous week (from November 4 to 10, 2024) it was at 6.26 euros per liter, so it has registered a significant drop of 0.71 euros per liter.
Taking into account that the week of November 13 to 19, 2023, extra virgin was paid at origin at 7.13 euros, the year-on-year drop in this product has been 1.58 euros per liter.
Therefore, the consumer currently costs 1.10 euros less per liter of extra virgin in the supermarket than a year ago, while the farmer charges 1.58 euros per liter less to produce this product than in November 2023.
