China will be able to reach its maximum level of coal consumption in 2025 thanks to its efforts to increase the use of clean energyaccording to a report released this Wednesday. The Asian country is the world’s largest consumer of fossil fuels, which depends relies heavily on coal as an energy source, despite the fact that its renewable energy installations are growing at a record level.
Coal consumption in China is expected to peak next year, according to 52% of experts consulted for a report by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Finland, and the International Society for the Study of Energy Transition (ISETS), Australia.
With all this, 36% of the experts consulted in the report believe that China has already reached its maximum level of coal use, more than double the 15% that said last year.
“Achieving carbon neutrality in a fast-growing economy like China is not easy, but the country’s significant efforts are beginning to bear fruit,” said Xunpeng Shi, president of ISETS.
Permits for coal-fired power plants they fell 83% in the first half of the year and no new coal steel projects have been authorized in the same period.
