The Official Gazette of Galicia (DOGA) publishes this Friday the beginning of the public exhibition phase of the pioneering initiative for sustainable production of 100% Galician copperthe ‘San Rafael Copper Project’. This new plan aims to become a driver of green reindustrialization in Galicia and a benchmark in sustainable mining at the European level.
The company explains that to articulate this new proposal in terms of sustainability, they took into consideration the allegations presented to the previous project counting on citizen participation. A process that takes more than 120 meetings with groups from all over Galicia.
Thus, Cobre San Rafael carried out technical and social interventions over recent years, such as the investment 4.5 million to channel and recover water from the area and the implementation of the ‘TERRAS’ program, whose objective is to contribute through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies to improve the environment, society and economic development.
The highly technological nature is one of the project strengths designed based on excellence and the best available techniques, and which, according to Cobre San Rafael, is called to satisfy the demands of the neighbors and citizens in general.
Without losing sight of the commitment to sustainability with Galician exploitations, the firm has been keeping the Touro-O Pino mine active since 1993 until today with the concession for the production of aggregates through an agreement with the company. Atalaya Mining, specialist in metal mining.

This agreement is based on joint development so that, as a series of milestones are met, Atalaya Mining will have greater participation. In this sense, to know the viability of the new Project, Cobre San Rafael carried out different geological investigations and metallurgical tests. These procedures were source of an independent feasibility study whose results were satisfactory, establishing in 100 million tons of mineral reserves.
