This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved a contribution of 860,000 euros destined to the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as you have learned Public. This disbursement, promoted by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 of Pablo Bustinduy, is intended to help the population in a situation of disability resulting from the ongoing genocide in Palestine perpetuated by the Israeli State.
With this item, the Ministry that directs Bustinduy wants to show his full support for UNRWAan agency that is the victim of a defamation campaign by Israel and its enormous propaganda apparatus, and also put the focus on one of the groups that is suffering the most from the damage caused by the constant attacks by the Israeli military forces: people who face a situation of sudden disability.
Bustinduy has shown his support for the Palestinian population and his rejection of the Israeli genocide since he came to the Government last year from different angles, which has not freed him from having some controversy with other members of the Government. He asked that the State make an extraordinary contribution to the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Court, or the obligation to clearly indicate the origin of products imported from occupied Palestinian territories. Furthermore, through a letter to the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, he censored the sale of weapons to Israel. The current minister has been especially persuasive within the Executive since the day of the investiture that those responsible for the crimes committed by Israel be tried by an International Court.
According to UNRWA’s own data, 83% of people with disabilities living in Palestine have lost their assistive devices and materials as a result of forced displacement caused by Israel’s attacks.
The disbursement approved this Tuesday in the Council of Ministers is especially focused on two areas. The first in relation to trauma and emergencies, as well as support for limb reconstruction and other surgeries specialized and also for hospitalization and subsidies for people who need surgery (orthopedic, vascular and general). Secondly, this amount is intended to provide comprehensive security services. multidisciplinary rehabilitation at different levels of care, in terms of assistive devices, artificial lameness and equipment.
This contribution of 860,000 is made by the Ministry through the Royal Board on Disability. The intention, as you have learned Publicis that a contribution for the aforementioned amount be channeled from Spain in response to the UNRWA call to provide financing for these two previous concepts with the intention of alleviating the situation of disability in the midst of the bloody conflict that Israel is fueling in Palestine.
UNRWA is financed almost entirely by voluntary contributions from States members of the UN and in this sense, the Government of Spain has already increased, since the last quarter of 2023, its voluntary contributions. Precisely, as a consequence of the situation of armed conflict that is being experienced, especially in Gaza, although with repercussions in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank, the humanitarian aid needs of the Palestinian population have increased exponentially. This is why the defamation campaigns orchestrated by Israel against this UN agency have also grown, with the aim of getting States to withdraw their contributions.
UNRWA currently coordinates all the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and its distribution, being the only organization with the logistical capacity and infrastructure to carry it out. The rest of the humanitarian agencies also depend on the work of UNRWA since they lack sufficient resources and logistical capacity on the ground. UNRWA works across education, healthcare, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency aid, even in times of armed conflict.
