PODCAST | Muface: public officials, private healthcare

The Spanish State pays private health insurance to one and a half million civil servants, who have special treatment that all taxpayers pay for. This special treatment means faster diagnoses, less waiting list, help for glasses, for the dentist… for them and their families. Instead of contributing to Social Security, these civil servants pay a fee to MUFACE, the General Mutual Insurance of State Civil Servants. It is not a mandatory system, officials can choose between public or private medicine, but 70% choose the latter option.

This year it is time to renew the agreement between the State and the insurers for the health management of MUFACE, and in the middle of this negotiation the questions arise: Should this system really be renewed? Isn’t it desirable for public officials to have public healthcare? Why exactly does this happen? We try to answer all these questions with elDiario.es journalists Sofía Pérez Mendoza and David Noriega.
