The PP has done it again. Manage a great tragedylike that of Valenciaslipping the buck, without assuming direct responsibilities and with very little respect for the victims who protest after the disaster. “Today is a politicized demonstration (…) they don’t care about the victims, only politics,” defended the Valencian PP before the wave of citizens, many affected by the floods, who demonstrated against the management of Carlos Mazón.
The PP’s record has been highlighted for ignoring the recommendations of experts and for its tendency to minimize the voices of those affected. In this video we do a practical memory exercise, reviewing the decisions and communication strategies that the popular have carried out in cases such as the Prestige, 11M, the derailment of the Valencia metro or the protocol of the residences in Madrid.
Prestige (2002)
In November 2002, the tanker Prestige, with 77,000 tons of oilsuffered an accident off the Galician coast. There was one of the worst environmental catastrophes of the history of Spain. The fuel stains reached the Galician coasts, the Bay of Biscay and even the beaches of southwestern France.
ruled Galicia and the State the Popular Party, with Fraga and Aznar, respectively. The management and communication strategy was as follows. The initial accident was not acted upon quickly, allowing the ship to remain offshore and continue spilling oil for several days.
Decisions not only come late, but also badly. It was decided to move away Prestige of the coast against the opinions of scientists, which resulted in a greater dispersion of the oil spill. The professionals proposed moving it closer to the port to control the spill. The Aznar Government minimized the impact.
The lack of good coordination between the Xunta de Galicia and the central government made it difficult to organize the cleaning and recovery of the affected areas. Does it sound familiar to you? The insufficient response and lack of transparency generated a social protest movement in Galicia, known as Never again. The PP and its related media have dedicated themselves to criminalizing this movement.
Yak 42 (2003)
On May 26, 2003, a Yak-42 plane carrying 62 Spanish soldiers from Afghanistan crashed in Turkey. There were no survivors. Federico Trillo He was Minister of Defense of Aznar between 2000 and 2004. The Yak-42 was an old and unreliable aircraft. Under Trillo’s supervision, its use was contracted to a low-cost intermediary company. The plane did not meet the minimum safety conditions for transporting troops.
The worst was yet to come after the accident. Trillo was accused of not having adequately supervised the identification process of the deceased. 30 of them they were assigned a wrong identity and there were cases in which the remains of several bodies were mixed in the same coffin.
The communication strategy of the PP Government It was full of lies, contradictions and lack of respect for families. The families’ criticism and demands led to a long judicial and humane process for them.
11M (2004)
On March 11, 2004, several trains in Madrid suffered a terrorist attack with explosives, which caused 193 dead and almost 2,000 injured.
The Government, with the Minister of the Interior Angel Acebes and the president José María Aznar front, insisted that ETA was responsible, despite growing evidence of an Islamist link.
They didn’t even play the prudence card, they directly lied. And they insisted on the lie of ETA. The reason for this insistence became known later. On March 14 there were general elections and an advisor close to Aznar came to the following conclusion: “If it was ETA, we will sweep; if it was the Islamists, the PSOE wins.”
Critics pointed out that the Government had minimized the risks of an Islamist attack in Spain. Despite international warnings and the high risk after Spain’s participation in the war of Iraq.
Valencia Metro (2006)
On July 3, 2006, a train on line 1 of the Valencia metro derailed at the Jesús station, causing 43 deaths and more than 40 injuries. The subsequent management was characterized by a lack of transparency and manipulation.
The Generalitat, under the command of Francisco Campsof the PP, tried to cover up the tragedy with the pope’s visit to the community. The mayor of the city, Rita Barberaalso from the PP, acted in the same way. Maximum focus on the pope despite the number of deaths in the accident.
An investigation commission of the Valencian Parliament held the former president politically responsible Camps and to the counselor Juan Cotino. The worst role was undoubtedly played by Ràdio Televisió Valenciana, at that time Channel 9. The commission determined that the PP hatched a “plot to hide the truth.”
Metro Line 7B (2006-2007)
In 2006, Esperanza Aguirrepresident of the Community of Madrid with the PP, modified the layout of the Metro Line 7Badding two stops in record time and generating an extra cost of 37 million euros.
This decision led to structural problems that have caused cracks and damage to residential buildings in San Fernando de Henares. The line was inaugurated in 2007. The affected families have denounced the lack of compensation and support from the Community of Madrid, which has not fully assumed responsibility for the damage. The management, started by Esperanza Aguirrehas caused more than 600 affected homes, 217 evictions and the destruction of several houses and businesses.
Alvia Accident (2013)
On July 24, 2013, an Alvia train derailed near Santiago de Compostela, causing 80 deaths and more than 140 injuries. The PP governments, both the central and the Xuntathey tried to put exclusive responsibility on the driver.
The intention was to free the institutions from any type of guilt. The victims blamed PP and PSOE for creating a less safe section due to the lack of the ERTMS (automatic braking) system in the Angrois curve. A curve of great risk.
From Europe, the European Parliament opened an infringement file against Spain for violating European regulations on railway safety.
The popular ones were accused of slowing down the investigation and hiding the victims’ demands.
It took 11 years for some justice to be done. The victims celebrated the conviction of the driver, Francisco José Garzón I loveand of which Andrés Cortabitarte was director of Traffic Safety at Adif.
Madrid Residences (2020)
7,291 residents died in Madrid during April and March 2020 after not being referred to a hospital. On March 25, it is known that the Ayuso Government developed a protocol in which hospital referral to users of nursing homes was vetoed. The PP Executive He said it was a leaked “draft” and there was no order.
Something that clashes with what the former counselor has explained on repeated occasions. Alberto Reyero. He opposed the protocol. The strategy of Ayuso’s cabinet has been similar to previous cases: minimizing the actions of his Government – calling some investigated protocols a draft -, blaming others, such as Pablo Iglesias, or not respecting the victims.
These have been the examples most significant of the PP management. A political and communicative management encouraged by the flight forward, the lack of assumption of responsibilities and the lack of respect for the victims of these tragedies.
