The local Government Board of the Santander City Council will approve this Monday the 18th the file to contract the works of the ‘Urban Forest-Conditioning and paving of Doctor Diego Madrazo Avenue’ project, with a budget of tender of 644,010 euros and an execution period of 6 months.
The forecast is that the works can start during the first quarter of 2025 and next fall you can enjoy the new green corridor. This was announced this Sunday in a press release by the Councilor for the Environment, Margarita Rojo, who highlighted that the City Council will improve this avenue, which currently has a wide paved median, into a green corridor as an urban forest.
EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE
“We are going to transform public space through an exemplary performance of insertion of green infrastructure in the city“, Rojo highlighted, and recalled that this is an urban renaturalization action that is part of the Santander Capital Natural project to promote urban renewal and environmental improvement of the entire environment.
The intervention will transform the median by allocating 4,500 square meters to green areas and 1,500 square meters with permeable pavement, capable of absorbing rainwater. The green areas will be crossed by winding paths that will invite you to discover spaces of abundant and dense vegetation, like an urban forest, in which citizens will coexist with certain species of fauna.
VEGETATION
The replacement of the current tiles with one is proposed. much smaller and permeable paved surface and the planting in the rest of a complex vegetation with several species of trees and shrubby and herbaceous strata.
The sensation will be more similar to that of a forest where the view is always limited.
The undulating route will alternate between areas under the trees and sunny sections where many interesting species can grow, both from an aesthetic and ecological point of view. This design aims for vegetation to interrupt the view from anywhere on the walk so that “don’t look like a straight walk merely flanked by plants,” Rojo detailed.
Thus, he highlighted that the sensation will be more similar to that experienced in a forest where the view is always limited. This path will open in a series of small squares that will also be where you reach from the zebra crossings. In addition, plant barriers will be created to protect users from traffic inconveniences.
PEDESTRIAN CONTINUITY
It is also planned to create a Zebra crossing at the intersection with Arsenio Odriozola street that allows pedestrian continuity to the two sections of the promenade without the need for the pedestrian to cross to the sidewalk and return to the promenade.
On the other hand, the project raises the collection of rainwater from the edge of roads adjacent to be incorporated into the walk and used by the planted trees and bushes, forming wet meadows or even temporary ponds, as a rain garden. The avenue will also have living spaces, with benches where you can enjoy the forest in the shade.
“This intervention, in addition to expand the permeable soil surface by 6,500 square meterswill transform Doctor Madrazo Avenue into a soft, friendly, permeable and leafy promenade, also connected to Mataleñas, one of the best parks in Santander,” said the mayor.
SANTANDER NATURAL CAPITAL
This project, led by the City Council, has as its main objective the reinforcing the role of the network of urban green areas in the conservation of biodiversity at a local scale, promoting environmental services that help improve the quality of life of the citizens of Santander. To achieve this, it relies on strategic planning, citizen participation and the involvement of the society of Santander.
This initiative will last until December 2025, and has as partners the Santander City Council, SEO/BirdLife, the Amica Association, the Climate Research Foundation and the University of Cantabria.
