The leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, was elected this Saturday as president of the European Patriotas party, whose parliamentary group in the European Parliament is the third largest after the community elections held on June 9. This weekend, in Paris, the first General Assembly of this recently created formation is being held, which aspires for the Member States of the European Union (EU) to strengthen their national sovereignty against those whom they revile as “Brussels bureaucrats.” ».
Abascal thus consolidates his growing international influence, after having boasted in the last two years of his relationships, among others, with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, and the president of Argentina, Javier Milei. Vox, after the European elections, was in favor of seeking a convergence between all the parties located to the right of the European People’s Party, which include Eurosceptic, populist and radical formations.
The idea of the ‘supergroup’ did not catch on and three different ones ended up being formed to the right of the popular ones: the Group of Conservatives and Reformists, where Vox was in the last legislature and in which the party of the Italian Meloni is located; Patriots for Europe, in which Vox has now joined together with the formations, among others, of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, and the French Marine Le Pen; and the Europe Group of Sovereign Nations, where the most radical options have a place, such as the extreme right of Alternative for Germany.
Following Vox’s commitment to abandon the Group of Conservatives and Reformists, the party has made an effort to maintain its alliance with Meloni, whose speech has moderated since she took office as Prime Minister of Italy and has even made a rapprochement with the president. of the European Commission, the German Ursula von der Leyen, who belongs to the European People’s Party. Now, Abascal’s movement, which decided on an alliance with Orbán advocated by the leader of its delegation in Europe, Jorge Buxadé, receives a full-fledged boost.
In a press release, Vox highlights that the newborn Patriotas party has four winning formations in the European elections in their respective countries: France, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The victory of the National Rally, the force led by Le Pen, caused the electoral advance announced by Emmanuel Macron, who even saw how he was defeated by the French radical right in the first round of the presidential elections. The liberal politician needed to appeal to a ‘democratic cordon’ to revalidate his victory and his baton of command in the Elysée.
Eleven countries represented
The Patriots party brings together groups from eleven European countries and has 86 deputies in the European Parliament. Patriots for Europe is the third largest group after the European People’s Party and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. «Patriots [escrito en inglés] “It is configured as a fundamental political actor on the European stage and its party, now chaired by Santiago Abascal, faces the challenge of consolidating that alternative majority to the traditional coalition of socialists and popular people,” they maintain from Vox.
“The presidency of Abascal, who also maintains an excellent relationship with other parties and leaders of the American continent, will greatly facilitate the lines of common work in defense of the sovereignty and prosperity of nations, mutual respect and the defense of freedom,” they add from the right-wing formation.
