The Civil Guard of Palencia has identified the dog that on August 25 attacked a neighbor in Neighborhoods of La Vega (Palencia)Justiniano Calvo, (78 years old), causing his death, and has located the owner, who is already being investigated for reckless homicide. To do this, Benemérita has needed to control more than 400 animals and 46 livestock farms until they found the dog that caused the man’s death after lunging at his neck.
According to sources from the Civil Guard, the dog is a Caucasian Mastiff large dimensionsowned by a rancher whose farm is in a municipality close to the place where the events occurred. In fact, the samples, thanks to which it was possible to determine the attacking animal, were taken in these facilities.
It was this Friday when the confirmation was obtained and, with it, we proceeded to transport the mastiff to the facilities of the Palencia Provincial Council which is competent in the control of these animals, given that the municipality does not have the capacity to do so. The dog will be quarantined for fourteen days to verify its aggressiveness and, if so, proceed to its sacrifice. Sources in the case have explained the complexity of the situation due to the new Animal Welfare Law as it is a specimen that is not domestic but not wild either, since it is intended for the custody of livestock.
As soon as the rancher is free after giving a statement although investigated for a crime of reckless homicide
The events occurred in the summer when the victim was walking along a path near the town and was surprised by a large dog, which caused him serious injuries. Another person who was walking in the area saw the victim and approached to help him. He reported what had happened by telephone and a Civil Guard patrol with medical services arrived at the scene, who attended to the victim at the Saldaña Health Center. Given the severity of the bites, the victim died before being evacuated by helicopter to a hospital.
From that same day, the Civil Guard began a complex investigation with the aim of identifying the animal causing the attack, to clarify these facts and thus prevent new attacks. For this, a device was created focused on locating dogs with characteristics compatible with the wounds suffered by the victim, to later identify them and be able to obtain saliva samples and possible remains of blood, managing to control more than 400 dogs, among which was including the dog that caused the attack and 46 livestock farms. The samples were analyzed in the Environmental Department of the Criminalistics Laboratory of the Civil Guard, obtaining a match, which allowed the animal responsible for the attack to be identified without margin of error.
In parallel with the location and identification of the animal, its owner has also been identified, who has been investigated for reckless homicide. The proceedings carried out have been made available to the Investigative Court No. 1 of Carrión de los Condes..
The Civil Guard thanks citizens for their collaboration and remembers that the emergency telephone number 062 is at your disposal 24 hours a day. Likewise, the existence of the free ALERTCOPS mobile application is reported to contact the Operational Centers of the State Security Forces and Corps in case of emergency. The app allows you to receive a warning message on your mobile when you are in an area affected by incidents.
