It is nothing new that cybercriminals try to sneak their scams by taking advantage of important dates, famous companies or things that are fashionable to carry out their attacks. And identity theft is possibly one of their favorite and most used techniques due to its ease and efficiency when it comes to getting what the attackers want.
Unfortunately, cybercriminals lack ethics and morals, and they also take advantage of humanitarian misfortunes such as the catastrophe caused by DANA in areas of the Valencian Community, Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia to launch scams and frauds and obtain the personal and banking data of the users.
Already last week it was reported that there were people scamming on the streets and by telephone who posed as volunteers and asked for money that was then never donated to those affected, in the same way that the website for donations was impersonated.
Now, given the alert of a new DANA that will affect our country again, it is the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) who is warning that they are being impersonated via SMS. By posing as this organization, cybercriminals manage to impersonate the AEMET and you even find out that it is them, and they inform you that “A severe storm is forecast in your region. Prepare and stay safe. Download the APP: https://aemet.blog.”
??IMPORTANT | Some users report that they have received SMS supposedly from Aemet, accompanied by a link. It’s false.
Aemet NEVER SENDS SMS. If you receive a similar message, DO NOT OPEN THE LINK. Our APP can only be downloaded from official stores. pic.twitter.com/OfetrTphlU
— AEMET (@AEMET_Esp) November 11, 2024
The thing is that this message is false, and if you follow the link they have given you, it is not the official AEMET app, but it hides malware that can infect your device and end up stealing your personal data and the banking. Fortunately or unfortunately, this deception is easy to detect because The AEMET does not send SMS of any kind, so if you receive one, it is always a fraud.
Furthermore, you can note some spelling mistakesminimal, but that are not commented on by an official organization for official communications. As always, you have to keep in mind some keys to avoid falling into scams of this type, such as never follow links that come to you by SMS or emails from strangersor downloading apps from unofficial sources, in this article we leave you some of this expert’s advice.
