Just a few days after All Saints’ Day, Madrid residents can enjoy a new holiday marked on their calendar. It is about the day of Our Lady of Almudena, patron saint of Madrid, celebrated this Saturday, November 9.
Madrid workers eagerly await the arrival of this festivitylocalwhich they only enjoy in the capital and not in the rest of the Community. However, this year will hardly alter the calendar of many, as it falls into Saturday.
La Almudena Day has great cultural and religious relevance in Madrid, as tribute is paid to the city’s patron saint not only on November 9, but over several days. And the City Council of the capital organizes a wide calendar of typical events such as the mass, the procession, the floral offering and the tasting of typical sweetsthe crown of Almudena.
Furthermore, this year, as part of the activities to mark this holiday, the Madrid en Vivo association, in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports, organizes ‘Patronas 2024’, a series of concerts starring exclusively female artists. Where to get the typical sweets of Almudena?
One of the most characteristic aspects of this Madrid festival is its typical sweet: the crown, also known as the Almudena rosco. At first glance, it may look like a roscón de Reyes. However, there are differences, since the Madrid dessert is usually simpler in its decoration.
Also, in terms of taste, the crown dough is slightly denser and less flavored than that of Roscón, which usually contains orange blossom water and other aromas.
Those interested in tasting this traditional Madrid dessert can do so free starting at 12:30 p.m. on November 9 in the Plaza Mayor. However, it is also possible to purchase the crown in the pastry shops that offer it on these dates. Some of the best known are El Riojano, La Mallorquina, Pan Delirio or El Panazo.
