The resident population in Spain stood at 48,946,035 inhabitants as of October 1, 2024, the maximum value in the historical series, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reports this Thursday, November 7. «This population growth in the country was due to the increase in people born abroad, since the number of people born in Spain decreased. This population born abroad – of 9,193,988 people – was larger than that of foreign nationality, due to the processes of acquiring Spanish nationality,” explains the INE.
All data correspond to the Continuous Population Statistics, dated October 1 and corresponding to the third quarter of this year. According to the INE count, the main nationalities of immigrants during the third quarter of 2024 were Colombian (34,600 people), Moroccan (25,500) and Spaniards born abroad (25,200). These are followed by Venezuelans (21,200), Peruvians (15,800), Italians (9,000), Argentines (7,300), Ukrainians (7,000), Romanians (5,700) and Hondurans (5,600). In total, the volume of foreigners who arrived in Spain increased during the third quarter of 2024 by 101,568 people, up to 6,735,487while the population of Spanish nationality grew in 33,322.
During that period, the population grew in all the autonomous communities. The largest increases occurred in the Valencian Community (0.54%), Madrid (0.46%), Catalonia (0.39%) and the Balearic Islands (0.32%). All of them above the national average (0.28%). These communities are followed by Cantabria and Murcia (both with 0.26), Navarra and Asturias (0.25), La Rioja (0.24), Galicia (0.20), Castilla-La Mancha (0.19) , Basque Country (0.18), Ceuta (0.14), Castilla y León, Aragón and the Canary Islands (0.13 in all three cases), Andalusia and Melilla (0.6) and Extremadura (0.2%).
The resident population in Spain grew by 134,890 people. In annual terms, population growth so far in 2024 is 425,801.
During the third quarter of 2024, the population grew in all the autonomous communities and in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The largest increases occurred in the Valencian Community (0.54%), the Community of Madrid (0.46%) and Catalonia (0.39%).
For its part, the number of households stood at 19,430,660 as of October 1, 2024, with an increase of 52,913 during the third quarter of 2024.
