The future Trump Administration has few “ministerable” names as secretaries of State. Elon Musk has been nominated as Secretary of Reforms, to modernize and cut the entire administration, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the secretary of (anti) Vaccines, with the aim of limiting their use. Despite his talkativeness, during the campaign Donald Trump has not given names, nor has he maintained contacts to configure the new cabinet, but he has left clues.
When Trump took office as the new US president in 2017, his first government included the cream of Wall Street: Rex Tillerson, left Exxon, as Secretary of State; banker Steve Mnuchin as Treasury Secretary; businessman Wilbur Ross in Commerce…But, in the end, his cabinet went down in history for the incessant resignations and dismissals, with spokespersons who lasted a week and a half. The government was in office in its last months, given the difficulties in holding the votes in the Senate to make the decisions official. replacements of the outgoing ministers, as Bob Woodward already commented in his books about the last months of that stormy mandate.
In his second attempt, Trump starts with an advantage: This time his team was prepared for victoryand the tycoon himself is clear about the profiles he is looking for, instead of settling for accepting the names proposed by the traditional leaders of his party. The Republican Party is already the Party of Trump, and the past and future president knows what kind of people he wants to surround himself with.
The figure on which the markets are focused is that of Robert LighthizerTrump’s former trade representative, and one of the few senior officials to survive his entire term. Lighthizer was the key player in Trump’s tariff policies, and is one of the favorites to return to his position, perhaps directly as Secretary of Commerce, with the aim of toughening the trade wars that the Republican has promised.
But the person who promises to attract media attention is Elon Musk. The richest man in the world and one of the Republican’s main propagandists, especially in his social network X, has announced that he will have the mission of “reforming the Government.” In addition to running Tesla and SpaceX, Musk would be in charge of finding ways to save costs in order to reduce the gigantic US public deficit without having to raise taxes. An almost impossible mission with which he seeks to become “the man who whispers to Trump.”
Another name that has been selling in recent weeks is Bobby Kennedy Jr.., former rival who ended up joining the magnate’s campaign. Kennedy is a conspiracy theorist who rejects vaccines, and Trump has opened the door to putting him direct a department such as Health or the FDAthe agency that regulates medications. In his last rallies, the Republican assured that the survivor of the historic family would be in charge of “women’s health,” among other things.
In the Treasury, another of the key departments, several names that are heard are: Larry Kudlowdirector of the National Economic Council in Trump’s first term and currently at a Republican-affiliated think tank; and John Paulsonthe director of the hedge fund that bears his name. According to a news report from the Bloomberg agency published last month, Paulson would be among the list of favorites, and Trump would have already spoken with him about a possible appointment.
And the national and international focuses will also be on the Foreign Affairs (Secretary of State) and Justice appointments. Among the possible candidates for foreign relations there is a mix of defenders of Ukraine and NATO, allies of Russia willing to weaken both as much as possibleand figures who propose ignoring European affairs to focus on China as the main geopolitical enemy. The decision can reassure Europe or send it into panic.
In Justice, for its part, all eyes are on Jeff Clark, a former senior Department official who encouraged Trump to carry out the coup attempt on January 6, 2021and that the magnate himself even considered appointing him as minister, with the order not to recognize the electoral results. If Clark ends up as minister, the signal would be worrying for those who fear that Trump will try to reduce civil liberties in the United States and use Justice as a weapon against his enemies.
