Democrat Sarah McBride made history this Tuesday by becoming the first transgender person in the United States Congress. McBride has defeated the Republican candidate John Whalen III in the elections to the House of Representatives in the state of Delaware.
The 34-year-old congresswoman already managed to be the first trans person to get a seat in the Senate for the state of Delaware in 2020.
Faced with the possible future of a Congress with a conservative majority in both chambers, McBride’s election is good news for the Democratic Party and for organizations in defense of the rights of the LGTBIQ+ community in the US. Human Rights Campaigning (HRC), the largest support organization for this group, which had supported McBride’s candidacy, has applauded his victory on social network X.
“We are so proud, Congresswoman-elect Sarah McBride! “His story will help LGTBQ+ young people to have bigger dreams, reach higher and change the world,” the organization said.
The prospects for Democrats are not at all encouraging. With the Senate lost and the White House about to fall under Trump’s control, Congress could be left as the last bastion to contain the advance of the conservative policies of the Republican party.
Likewise, if the Republicans manage to regain the majority in the lower house, the Democrats will find themselves in one of the worst scenarios they had imagined in the previous weeks.
