The Confederation of Scientific Societies of Spain (Cosce), which brings together 42,000 researchers from all over the country, has requested this Tuesday the creation, “as soon as possible”, of investigation commissions to analyze possible errors committed during the management of the catastrophe caused by DANA in several autonomous communities, especially in Valencia. In addition, the organization supports the work of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which it describes as “rigorous.”
In a statement, Cosce has expressed its condolences for the victims and its solidarity with those affected, while offering its intermediation for the participation of any scientific institution interested in collaborating with the mitigation of the emergency.
On the other hand, it has recognized the “rigorous work” carried out by the scientific experts of the Aemet in its forecasts and has valued “very positively the offer by institutions in the scientific field, such as the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), of “carry out concrete actions to help confront the effects of this disaster.”
«We understand that in the short term the priority actions must be those that guarantee the solution of the very serious problems caused by the disaster. But we also believe that another priority should be the establishment, as soon as possible, of investigative commissions that, leaving aside political positions, analyze possible errors committed,” Cosce points out in its note. Likewise, he continues, it is necessary that they “propose solutions for a future in which, without a doubt, and in the context of climate change that affects the planet, these situations are going to take place with increasing frequency,” he warns.
For the organization, it is important that in the reconstruction work of the affected areas “all the necessary studies” of flood risk are carried out for different return periods and the results obtained “be the guide for this reconstruction of both homes and infrastructure.” ».
