The Xunta Council approved this Monday the Galicia Blue Economy Strategy 2024-2027which includes 40 measures that will mobilize more than 114 million euros with the aim of protecting marine ecosystems and making appropriate use of resources to guarantee long-term economic development.
Rueda revealed what will be the roadmap to place Galicia as a “reference” in the field of combining the protection of the marine environment and economic activity. The new Strategy is “fundamental” due to the community’s close connection with the sea and its economic potential linked to marine resources.
A potential that must be taken advantage of since Galicia is the region of Spain with more kilometers of coastline and that has important ports and a strong fishing tradition that supports an important part of the Galician economy.
For this reason, the president of the Xunta explained that the purpose of this document is respond to challenges such as climate changethe overexploitation of aquatic resources and the need to diversify the productive fabric by combining sustainability and economic growth.
The Xunta has stressed that this Strategy was developed through a “live and participatory” process in which up to 11 work groups participated by representatives of the activities of the Galician blue economy. The result was 40 measurements which together will involve the mobilization of more than 114 million euros.
Emerging sectors
Thus, the aim is to position the emerging sectors linked to this field as international references and guarantee the sustainability and circularity of fishing, shellfish harvesting and aquaculture as nuclear activities. It also seeks to integrate the different activities that make up the blue economy through innovation connectors, reinforcing governance, promoting blue R&D&I and promoting the development and retention of specialized talent.
The measures of this Strategy are structured in six axles: intersectoral cooperation, innovation connectors, competitiveness, marine heritage, work and talent, as well as information and communication.
Among the actions included are, for example, the creation of a network that integrates the different agents of the blue economy of Galicia, the promotion of synergies between the biotechnology and aquaculture sectors, a Galician catalog of R&D&I blue or the creation of an online blue biotechnology center.
