The storm leaves floods in Tarragona, advances towards the Barcelona coast and forces more trains to be suspended

The rain storm has caused flooding in the Tarragona area in the early hours of this Monday. While the southern regions of Catalonia have paralyzed part of the activity due to the weather forecast, the storm front is now advancing towards coastal and central pre-coastal sectors, around the Barcelona metropolitan region.

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has issued a warning for violent weather until 8:25 a.m. in the regions of Penedès, the central and pre-coastal coast and Ponent. Specifically, the risk is very high in Anoia, Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès, Garraf and Baix Llobregat, while it is high in Barcelonès, Vallès Occidental, Bages, Solsonès, Segarra, Noguera , the Alt Urgell and the Pallars Jussà. There is a possibility of rocks measuring more than two centimeters, wind gusts of more than 25 meters per second and tornadoes and hoses. In addition to a storm alert of more than 100 liters per square meter in 24 hours in central Catalonia and the central coast and pre-coast.

During the night, heavy showers fell on the coast of Camp de Tarragona, mainly in Tarragonès. The downpours have advanced through the Terres de l’Ebre, leaving a lot of water in a short time. Between this Sunday and until five in the morning this Monday, Meteocat estimates that more than 100 liters per square meter of precipitation have fallen in Camp de Tarragona. However, he added that the most intense and abundant rain has not fallen on stations of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat).

The Generalitat Firefighters have received 164 warnings about the rains between 8:00 p.m. this Sunday and 7:00 a.m. this Monday. The majority came from the city of Tarragona. Among others, the emergency corps have saved four people isolated by water in the Catllar area, who have been relocated to relatives’ homes. In addition, they have attended to several floods and the collapse of a wall in Picamoixons.

Railway traffic on the R4 is interrupted between Vilafranca del Penedès and Sant Vicenç de Calders due to adverse weather conditions, as reported by Renfe. This is added to the lines already canceled in the south of Catalonia until 3:00 p.m.

The regions with restricted mobility are Baix Ebre, Montsià, Terra Alta, Ribera d’Ebre, Baix Camp, Priorat, Tarragonès, l’Alt Camp and Baix Penedès. Among other measures, in that area classes have been suspended for a total of 126,587 students, which represents 7.9% of all students in Catalonia. Civil Protection has also sent an alert to the mobile phones of people in these areas to ask for caution.
