The Mediterranean as a gasoline can

Valencia has recently suffered violent flash floods that have caused more than 200 deaths, many missing, the flooding of many homes and businesses, and much suffering. Bridges collapsed, streets became rivers of muddy water with floating cars pushed like toys. People were trapped in their homes and cars for hours. Many died, but others were rescued. Everyone was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disaster and will need time to recover from this tragedy.

The epicenter of the floods were the towns in the highlands near Valencia, such as Utiel and Chiva, and those located further down, along the normally dry channels that became roaring rivers south of Valencia, such as Paiporta, Catarroja and Benetuser. The city of Valencia itself was not flooded due to the diversion of the Túria River, after the 1957 floods.
