A screenshot of Sentinel 1, ESA’s artificial polar orbit satellite within the Copernicus Program intended for land and ocean monitoring, shows the dimension reached by the floods of the DANA as it passes through the province of Valenciawhich leaves a still provisional balance of 202 fatalities.
This is shown on its social network by X Copernicus EU, the Earth observation component of the EU space program, which has released the image taken this Friday showing in blue tones the flooded areasafter rains described as historic and that caused rivers and ravines to overflow.
This same Saturday, Copernicus has released a data visualization in which it compares two acquisitions from the Sentinel 2 satellite over the area south of Valencia, captured on October 26 and 31, 2024, before and after the floods that were recorded on the 29th.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service of the European Union has commissioned Telespace Iberiana company specialized in geoinformation and satellite navigation, the preparation of maps of some of the areas affected by DANA that has hit the province of Valencia and other places in Spain, as reported by the company in a statement. Specifically, the company has prepared maps of l’Horta Sud, including Paiportaone of the most affected sectors, where many lives and structural damage have been claimed by the floods of water coming from the west.
These maps, which are delivered to the competent authorities, are a “fundamental tool” so that emergency services can carry out their work “quickly and efficiently.” They detail essential information about blocked roads, damaged buildings, or missing infrastructure, “setting up a damage assessment that allows them to identify and prioritize jobs.
Telespazio Ibérica has been working with this Copernicus service for years, every day of the year, and has done so previously, for example, in the earthquake that devastated Morocco or the floods in Algeria.
