The president of the La Caixa Foundation and the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (CECA) revalidates its position at the head of the World Institute of Savings Banks and Retail Banks (WSBI) for another three years. The general assembly of the entity, held in Rome, chose Isidre Fainé precisely in the year that the association turns 100 years old. During his mandate, the German Peter Simon will remain general director of the institution.
The group includes 6,400 entities from 78 countries. According to their data, they have 13.25 trillion dollars in assets and serve 1.7 billion clients. In his speech, Fainé wanted to focus on the contribution to social work that the firms make. “Every year, WSBI member entities allocate $3.5 billion to social initiatives. Our goal is to reach $5 billion in two years”he highlighted.
For example, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, was present at the event.
“At WSBI we use the famous three Rs to summarize our value system and business culture: retailto refer to our commitment to customers; rootedbecause we are committed to the territory; and responsiblefor our commitment to the society of which we are part,” added the leader.
The executive indicated four priorities for his mandate. The first, financial and social inclusion. “This includes offering microcredit to those who would not normally qualify, maintaining extensive branch networks in rural areas, or serving all segments of the population.” The second: digitalization. “The priority areas of action are artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, risk management and improving the customer experience,” he explained.
Finally, Fainé highlighted his desire to continue promoting sustainability. “WSBI members will continue to launch initiatives of all kinds to support companies on their path to the energy transition, in addition to participating in a multitude of community-based projects,” he said. Finally, social responsibility, with the creation of a fund for poverty reduction and support for young people.
“The members of the WSBI have more than justified reasons to proclaim that we are more than mere financial institutions. With philanthropic actions, we drive social change and facilitate human progress,” he summarized at the end of the speech.
