Based on the data managed by the Geological and Mining Institute, throughout Spain there are more than 10,000 caves cataloged. Some of them are simply small cavities in the rock measuring a few square meters, while others may have mammoth dimensions. But none of them is comparable to one of the caving paradises most impressive what is in the world: Grotto of Wonders.
To find this cave, whose name already indicates that it is an enclave of enormous beauty, you have to go to the south of the Iberian Peninsula: below the urban area of Aracena, a town located in the mountain range of the same name north of the province of Huelva, this spectacular grotto winds its way more than a kilometer long that leaves astonished all the daring ones who decide to enter it.
The Grotto of Wonders: an underground paradise
At first glance, Aracena seems simply a pretty town, although it does stand out for its splendid 13th century castle and the imposing Priory Church of Our Lady of Greater Sorrow, located next to him. But the true jewel of the town is neither in its architectural heritage nor in the panoramic views of Sierra Morena: no matter how much you try you will not see it, since you have it under your feet.
The Grotto of Wonders meanders through below the Aracena castle for 1,200 meters, and in addition to being one of the most visited caves of Spain (as stated on the City Council website), it is also one of the oldest: It was discovered in 1850 and opened to the public in 1914. During these 110 years it has become a reference of ‘caving tourism’, and there are no shortage of reasons: the enclaves it hides are incredibly beautiful.
The constant water erosion against the rocks of the hill on which the castle stands they created below the fortress circular network of three-level galleries where you can see all types of geological formations, from stalactites and stalagmites even curtains, through columns or floors. But what really attracts attention about the Grotto of Wonders are the crystal clear lake waters that flood it.
With an average temperature that is maintained constant between 16ºC and 19ºC, as indicated in the Aracena tourist portal, The Grotto of Wonders has been attracting speleologists and curious people more than a century. You can get your advance ticket through this website by 18 euros, since many long to enter this natural paradise of Huelva.
