It will be the first time in its centenary history that the Royal Nautical Club of La Coruña, one of the most prestigious yacht clubs on the national scene, organizes a competition in the most successful Olympic sport in history: canoeing. It was the great news that the councilor for culture and tourism of the Herculino council offered in his words: Gonzalo Castro, on the occasion of the presentation of a great event in which his department has bet heavily; the City of La Coruña Canoeing, which is one of the pieces of the A Coruña Nautical Festival concept immersed in the multi-nautical benchmark of our country, in the Abanca Week. The municipal sports manager Manuel Vázquez was also present at the event, as well as the president of the Galician Canoeing Federation Alfredo Bea.
The objective is clear: to strengthen the tourist possibilities of the Herculean city in the low season, with a clear commitment to the sea, being clear about what is a reality: that La Coruña has an incontestable quality as a nautical base; and there is no doubt that for sailors and sailors that the city has attractive quality due to many virtues: an incomparable estuary with a generous nature, a geographical point with very good communications: ranging from its proximity to Asturias and Portugal as well as to Santiago from Compostela and to the Rías Baixas; In addition to its location in the heart of the Rías Altas, all with excellent hospitality that offers great services at reasonable prices.
At the event that will inaugurate the project, a fashion class in canoeing: dragons. There will be half a hundred crews of 12 paddlers (plus two substitutes) that will compete in the waters of the A Coruña bay: on the San Antón Track, with the competition starting at around ten thirty in the morning… the first in go to sea: the Veteran Women’s Class seven teams fighting, which will be divided into two rounds.
In the category the girls from the City of Pontevedra Canoeing School, Club Breogán do Grove, Náutico Folixa, As Bolboretas and the Auga Club (both from La Coruña), from the Asturias Dragon Boat and the Rías Baixas de Boiro Canoeing Club.
After them it’s time for the men’s veterans, with Cabanas de Ferrolterra, Folixa, Pontevedra, Olívico de Vigo, Breogán de O Grove, Auga and Asturias.
This is how we complete all the rounds that will run until one in the afternoon for the rest of the female, male and mixed categories; As is usual, the one who closes the competition will be the BCS, the dragons that are applying their activity as breast cancer therapy, in line with the European guidelines and the Spanish council itself.
The teams competing in this category will be Bolboretas 1, Cidade de Lugo, Bolboretas 2, Folixa and Auga; in a round that will begin at five to one.
Given that October is breast cancer month, it is planned to be read by Montse Vázquez and Soledad Tohux from the Bolboretas Club of La Coruña, followed by the awards ceremony.
A cultural event and two sports competitions complete the program in November. On November 7 in the Abanca de la Marina auditorium, the round table The Nautical of the 11th Century will take place, moderated by the journalist Andrés Ríos and will have as speakers the presidents of the Spanish Federations of sailing, rowing, canoeing, surfing, motorboating and water skiing-wakeboarding.
Already on the weekend of November 16 and 17 it will be the turn of the Isabel Zendal Regatta for female crews from Vigo, Baiona, Sanxenxo, La Coruña, Gijón, Santander and Getxo among others, who will compete in J80 regattas, by system of league.
As a finale, on the 23rd and 24th, the base sailing competition will be held with more than 150 boys and girls boats, which will seek a place in the next national and continental events of the optimist class. Event named after Aurelio Fernández Lage.
