The Local Police of Melilla has intervened 72 charges of nitrous oxide, the so-called ‘laughing gas’during a police check, substances prohibited for consumption when they were intended for a party. The agents have begun processing several complaints, including the transport of dangerous goods by road.
As reported this Monday by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Citizen Security, the events occurred around 3:45 a.m., when a vehicle was stopped randomly to carry out the pertinent documentation checks and breathalyzer tests.
“The somewhat avoidant and nervous attitude of the driver,” As the note details, made the agents suspicious about the possibility that he was transporting or carrying some type of narcotic substance. Therefore, they proceeded to carry out “a rudimentary search” inside the vehicle, which made it possible to find three boxes containing a total of 72 charges of nitrous oxide, known as ‘laughing gas’.
The police spokesperson has indicated that “the gas charges, according to the first investigations, were taken for an event or party.” For this reason, they have been intervened “since Its sale is prohibited outside the established scope and framework, and less for consumption.” In this regard, he has warned that “this substance can be dangerous for individual and community health.”
In this sense, he explained that nitrous oxide can lead to serious consequences, such as lack of oxygen to the brain, causing fainting and respiratory arrest. “Continuous consumption of this substance can damage the spinal cord and cause death from asphyxiation,” he said.
The Local Police Investigation group has been in charge of the corresponding procedures and the processing of several complaints, among them, the transport of dangerous goods by road.
