The Court of Instruction number 8 of Vigo has issued an indictment against the former director of an association related to Opus Dei in the Galician capital, accused of sexual abuse of minors, as stated. Vigo Lighthouse and elDiario.es has been able to confirm.
“We apologize for what happened and we deeply regret that an Opus Dei faithful has acted in this way,” the prelature has admitted in a statementin which he admits the events (which occurred in Vigo, but also during some coexistence in Madrid), something that the person involved has also done, who “has stopped being part of Opus Dei.”
The events date back to April 2023, when the vicar of the Opus Dei delegation in the Northeast of the peninsula “was informed of alleged criminal conduct of a crime of sexual abuse of a minor, attributed to a lay faithful of the Prelature and occurred within the scope of a youth association in Vigo.” The accused performed functions of coach and spiritual advisor. The case is one of those included, within the abuses belonging to Opus Dei, in the controversial report to give light issued last December by the Episcopal Conference. The report includes seven cases: seven: four affect priests and three lay people.
“The Opus Dei Delegation immediately contacted the affected minor and his parents, in order to offer them the necessary support and assistance from the beginning. Likewise, an investigation was initiated that concluded that these facts were credible,” the note emphasizes, adding that it was agreed with the parents of the minor that “they would be the ones who would bring the facts to the attention of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.” They were unable to do so due to the defendant’s self-incrimination.
The fact is known on the same day that Pope Francis received Alejandro Arellano, dean of the Tribunal de la Rota and appointed plenipotentiary commissioner for decide the future of the fetish sanctuary of Opus Dei, that of Torreciudad, whose ownership and management are disputed by the Work and the Bishopric of Barbastro-Monzón.
