October pink month of breast cancer prevention. Komen Italia, together with the Ministry of Culture, relaunches ‘Prevention is our masterpiece’ and the Prevention Caravan also starts again: tomorrow from Sicily, from Palermo to Catania, with 7 high-tech mobile units. There will be 77 stops in 36 cities. Women will be able to do the screening, in collaboration with the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli Irccs, inside the Komen campers.
In each stage (in the photo the complete list) will be offered free of charge: tests for the early diagnosis of breast cancercervical and other cancers prevalent in women (secondary prevention); practical workshops and educational sessions to promote physical activity, well-being and correct nutrition (primary prevention); ad hoc programs aimed at helping patients who have experienced an oncological disease to recover full psycho-physical well-being and reduce the risk of developing a recurrence of the disease (tertiary prevention).
Among the most significant stages of this journey: the initial stage of Palermoon the occasion of which the new Mobile Unit will be inaugurated which Komen Italia will allocate to ongoing programs, shared with the Sicily Region, to increase the opportunities for early diagnosis of breast cancer on the island. On this occasion the Teatro Massimo will be lit up in pink; the stages in Calabria region to help make up for delays caused by the pandemic in institutional mammography screening programs; the stage at the Olympic Stadium in Romeorganized in collaboration with the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), to offer free activities to raise awareness and prevent the main gender-related oncological diseases on the occasion of the match of the Italian men’s national football team against the Belgian one; the stops in Genoa and Turin to give strength to the Pope Francis Laundry project initiated by Procter & Gamble with the Apostolic Charity and the Community of Sant’Egidiopart of the P&G program for Italy. Two of the thirteen events that bring prevention opportunities to facilities where homeless people can take care of their personal hygiene and wash their clothes completely free of charge; thehe final stop in Piazza Duomo in Milan in collaboration with the Milan Polyclinic.
“Raising awareness is the first step to increase awareness that we need to take care of our breasts even in the absence of symptoms. Komen Italia promotes prevention throughout the year and has done so for 25 years during which many advances have been made in the scientific medical field which have allowed mortality to be drastically reduced. This result is particularly true where there is equal access to prevention and treatment, unfortunately in Italy there still remain differences between North and South in the implementation of screening programs and there are submerged areas in metropolitan cities. Precisely to combat this disparity we decided to take our Prevention Caravan around Italy with particular attention to women with socio-economic difficulties who would not be included in the screening programs”, underlined Daniela Terribile, president of Komen, who today presented the initiatives for the month of October in Rome at Mic ‘Prevention is our masterpiece ‘.
