The decision is made
The definitive official communication is still missing, but now the future of the Alpine Formula 1 team seems clear: from 2026 the French team owned by Renault will become one customer teampurchasing the power unit from another supplier (almost certainly Mercedes) and thus abandoning the Losanga enginesmade in the historic Viry-Châtillon factory which, at this point, sees its very future existence in serious danger.
According to the rumors reported by the French site Auto Hebdo today, Monday 30 September 2024, the validation of Alpine Racing’s transformation plan. Representatives of the Viry-Châtillon staff, who had expressly expressed their desire not to let the French factory die and to be able to continue producing Formula 1 power units, were not listened to. The final decision of the French giant will be to stop producing F1 engines in the historic site located in the Île-de-France region. A decision which, inevitably, will bring with it large-scale consequences also from an employment point of view.
Useless appeals: a piece of F1 history comes to an end
The situation – which in any case appeared to have been evident for some time – has worsened in recent days. The On September 20, the factory representatives met with Renault CEO Luca de Meoin a meeting defined as “positive”. On this occasion, the employees’ proposals to keep the Viry site open were presented, guaranteeing the performance competitiveness of what would have been the new 2026 power unitsa season in which the technical regulations regarding engines will radically change in Formula 1.
Obviously though the proposal did not meet the approval of the Losanga management. Six days later, on September 26, representatives of the Alpine Racing France staff expressed their deepest concerns about the outcome of the consultative vote scheduled for today. And finally, according to the credible rumors of Auto Hebdothe final decision has indeed arrived. From 2026 Renault – which in history has won 12 Constructors’ and 11 Drivers’ world titles with its engines – will no longer be a protagonist in Formula 1.
