Mexico City.– The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that “John” has intensified to Category 3, with maximum winds of 195 km/h, and did not rule out that it could gain strength before impacting on land.
“John is now a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible in the next few hours before landfall,” it warned.
For its part, the National Water Commission reported that “John” is slowly approaching the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, and estimated that it will make landfall around 11:00 p.m. Previously, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador alerted residents of Costa Chica in Guerrero and from Cuajinicuilapa to Huatulco, Oaxaca, about Hurricane “John,” which, he said, will make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane.
“Look for higher ground, protect yourselves and don’t forget that the most important thing is life; material things are replaced. We will be watching,” he wrote on his X account, formerly Twitter.
On Monday afternoon, authorities in Oaxaca and Guerrero ordered the suspension of classes in anticipation of the imminent impact of this meteorological phenomenon. In Oaxaca, in addition to this measure, Governor Salomón Jara reported that he would travel to the Costa region to coordinate emergency actions. “Generate the institutional deployment of all state agencies; mobilize machinery to address any contingency on roads and highways; enable temporary shelters to care for families; evacuate tourist areas, suspend classes in all educational institutions in the area; keep the population informed,” he said in a video. In Guerrero, the national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez, and Governor Evelyn Salgado reported that the DN-III plan, the Navy plan, and the National Guard plan were launched in the municipalities of Cuajinicuilapa, Copala, Florencio Villarreal and Marquelia, in the Costa Chica region. The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation reported that the Puerto Escondido International Airport, Oaxaca, suspended all flights this afternoon and evening pending the weather conditions resulting from Hurricane John. Aeromexico reported that, due to the weather conditions generated by John, it will offer a protection policy to passengers for all affected trips on September 23 and 24 to, from or through Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. For its part, Viva Aerobus reported on its official website that four of its flights were affected this Monday in different cities in several states and for Tuesday there will be another 16 flights, for a total of 20. Volaris, meanwhile, also stated that its flights to and from Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Tuxtla Gutierrez and Acapulco may be affected, so it recommended that users stay alert to the status of their flight on its website.
