After its commitment in Formula E and the launch of the MCXtrema, approved for “recreational” use on the track, Maserati is now back as a protagonist in the more classic races for production-derived cars. Last weekend, in fact, the new GT2 dominated the fifth seasonal event of the Fanatec GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli, winning Race 1 and placing second in Race 2. A competitiveness achieved immediately thanks to the quality of the initial project, given that everything stems from the MC12, a real racing car adapted for road use.
We return to the origins, to the series models that gentleman drivers took to the track, to the engine of Fangio’s Formula 1 250 F used for grand tourers to be used on roads open to traffic. “A world – explains Maria Conti, the new number one of Motorsport for the trident house – that we bring back to life in many ways, from Formula E to limited edition models to be used on the track for private events, through to races reserved for cars derived from series GTs. We play on multiple tables – explains Conti – because the approach to the world of racing today must be much more eclectic and, in a certain sense, functional to technological development”.
The manager refers to the challenge of electrification and obviously to the limited production of supercars. It is no coincidence that the MC20 was born with its own engine and designed starting from a blank sheet: the famous V6 Nettuno that on the MCXtrema reaches 740 hp (and God only knows how many for the version that races in the Fanatec GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli championship) and that already for the “base road” version is at 630. What they are capable of in this Motorsport department is immediately clear when you discover that the MCXtrema has a featherweight of around 1300 kg and therefore an astonishing weight/power ratio of around 1.8 kg/hp.
A racing world apart, born from the work of a starred test driver: Andrea Bertolini, Maserati chief test driver, one of the most successful drivers in the GT categories with four world titles aboard the glorious MC12. He is the one who follows the development of the Maserati “monsters”. A unique way of “thinking” about cars that explains the concept of quintessence of Maserati DNA.
