Subaru and Panasonic join forces in the field of electric batteries. The two Japanese companies have in fact announced plans to prepare the supply of lithium-ion batteries for vehicles and the creation of a joint battery factory in Oizumi, Gunma Prefecture, in Japan of course. What does this agreement consist of? In fact, Panasonic will supply its next-generation cylindrical automotive lithium-ion batteries for battery-powered vehicles that Subaru plans to produce starting in 2025.
Subaru and Panasonic together for batteries
Let us remember that Subaru’s goal is to achieve 50% BEV of a total of 1.2 million global sales by the end of the decade. In this sense, the production and supply of the above-mentioned batteries by Panasonic will start from fiscal year 2027 at the Suminoe plant in Osaka and from 2028 at the new plant in Oizumi. About these new batteries: the annual cell production capacity at the two plants involved in this project is expected to will reach 20 GWh by 2030.
Towards the future and beyond
Atsushi Osaki, President and CEO of Subaru, explained: “We are accelerating our efforts towards electrification to help achieve a zero carbon society. With a manufacturing history of more than 100 years, together with Panasonic we will continue to strengthen our competitiveness among the world’s leaders and create the next 100 years of history.” For the project, the overall investment amounts to approximately 460 billion yen.
