The Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano has made another gaffe, but this time – he claims – the fault lies with his social media manager, who resigned precisely because of the mistake he made.
Yesterday, Wednesday 8th August, Sangiuliano’s Instagram profile published a post to announce that the Council of Ministers has established the Neapolis 2500 Committee, a new body aimed at organizing and managing the celebrations for the 2,500 years since the foundation of Naples, which according to tradition occurred in 475 BC.
However, the post erroneously stated that the Committee’s mission is to celebrate “two and a half centuries of history” of the Neapolitan city, corresponding to 250 years.
Many users immediately noticed the obvious mistake. The post was promptly corrected and a few hours later the minister – originally from Naples – took to social media again to clarify that the gaffe was attributable to his social media manager.
“The mistake on the Instagram profile regarding the birth of the Neapolis 2500 National Committee is evidently my social media manager’s. This is why I accepted his resignation,” wrote Sangiuliano on X.
Below the post appeared a comment from Riccardo Pirrone, president of the newly formed union of social media managers: “As president of the National Association of Social Media Managers – Pirrone writes – I consider it offensive to publicly and solely blame an employee for such a mistake and even have him resign for it. We will look into the matter further”.
Several users also remind Sangiuliano of his numerous gaffes, such as when he said that Times Square is in London, or when – as a judge for the Strega Prize – he admitted that he had not read the finalist books, or again when he stated that Christopher Columbus based his explorations on the theories of Galileo Galilei.
