Sony just released its financial report for the most recent quarter of 2024 with a new record for PlayStation 5. Here they indicated that they sold 2.4 million consoles during the period, bringing their total to 61 million. This puts it far ahead of its direct competition, the Xbox Series X, which has an estimated 21 million consoles sold.
Despite these numbers for the PlayStation 5, it’s not all good news for Sony. In fact, they also reported a decline in their hardware sales. For comparison, they showed that in the same quarter last year they had sold 3.3 million consoles. Almost a million more than this year.
In addition to this, there was also a decline in software sales, although overall it remains strong according to them. Some analysts believe that the decline in game sales could be due to the high prices with which some experiences are launched. Most of them already come out with a price of $69.99 in their standard editions and at least in Mexico there is no option to get their digital games in national currency.

This drop in sales seems to be a constant in the industry and not just regarding PlayStation 5. Nintendo recently shared its data where it also announced a decrease compared to last year. While Microsoft had a 42% drop in its hardware sales. It seems that there is not as much interest in buying consoles this year and we can expect it to continue to decrease until a new one is released.
What else was revealed about PlayStation?
Sony’s report also talked a bit about its PlayStation Plus subscription service. In their report, they indicated that they also experienced both an increase and a decrease in their active users. This is when compared to both this year’s performance and that of the last quarter.
The service currently has 116 million active users. This is up from 108 million in the same quarter last year. However, from the first to the second quarter of 2024, it lost two million users, compared to 118 million at the time. What do you think is the reason for this?
