The PP’s Committee on Rights and Guarantees has agreed, in accordance with its Statutes and regulations, to resolve the information file opened against the former deputy mayor of Valencia under Rita Barberá, and to expel him.
The PP takes this decision after learning of the sentence that condemns Grau to four and a half years in prison for the crimes of embezzlement and bribery within the framework of part A of the so-called Taula case. This week, the Court sentenced the former right-hand man of Mayor Barberá for the crimes of embezzlement and bribery in the 2007 campaign and he must also pay a fine of five million euros.
According to sources from the PP, in 2016, when it became known that there were judicial actions in which Alfonso Grau was involved, the party opened an information file against him and suspended him from membership. When an oral trial was opened, the information file was transformed into a disciplinary file and now, with the sentence handed down (not final), the Committee, in accordance with its statutes and regulations, has resolved the file and has initially proceeded to expel him.
Alfonso Grau may appeal against this decision to the National Committee on Rights and Guarantees, alleging whatever he deems appropriate.
The Second Section of the Court considers the deputy mayor Rita Barberá, who governed Valencia between 1991 and 2015, as the author of the continued crimes of embezzlement and passive bribery committed in connection with the financing of the PP’s electoral campaign for the 2007 municipal elections. For both crimes, the Court appreciates the mitigating circumstance of undue delays. Grau, 83 years old, must compensate the Valencia City Council with 388,150 euros, according to the sentence announced by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJ).
The former deputy mayor was already sentenced in 2019 by the Valencia Court to four years in prison for accepting two luxury watches, valued at 25,000 euros, which were given to him by a businessman who had been awarded several municipal contracts.
