Paris, France.- On the sixth official day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, boxer Imane Khelif, from the nation of Algeria, is being singled out for participating in the women’s event without passing “gender tests.”
The Algerian defeated her counterpart, Angela Carini, of Italy, in 46 seconds. Carini broke down in tears at the end of the fight due to the harshness of her opponent’s blows.

“I’ve never been hit so hard in my life. It’s up to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to judge,” said Angela Carini after the fight.
The Imane Khelif case set off a bombshell at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In the uproar that the fight caused, fans demanded the disqualification of the African.
However, the IOC defended the athlete for being the victim of an arbitrary decision by the International Boxing Association (IBA).
“All athletes participating in the boxing tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games comply with the eligibility and registration rules of the competition, as well as all applicable medical regulations established by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU),” they said in their statement.
“As in previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of athletes are based on their passport,” the International Olympic Committee added.
“According to the iBA minutes, available on its website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only subsequently ratified it and only subsequently requested that a procedure to be followed in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Rules. The minutes also say that the iBA should “establish a clear procedure on gender testing,” the IOC said.
Amidst the tumult, the memory of the time when Mexican boxer Brianda Tamara Cruz was seriously injured after experiencing blows from Imane Khelif in women’s boxing was recalled.
“When I fought her, I felt like I was way out of my league. Her punches hurt me a lot. I don’t think I’d ever felt that way in my 13 years as a boxer, not even in my sparring with men. Thank God I got out of the ring that day, and it’s good that they finally realized it,” were her words after her fight in 2022.
