He prostate cancer It has become one of the greatest threats to men’s health, being the most lethal type of cancer among men, with 9.8 deaths per 100,000 men in Mexico and Latin America.
Unlike other types of cancer, such as breast or cervical cancer, prostate cancer does not present early symptomswhich makes it a silent and dangerous disease.
“It is a disease that progresses without giving warning signs,” commented Dr. Alberto Huante Pérez, specialist in oncological urology and member of the robotic surgery committee at the ABC Medical Center. “Unfortunately, When patients present symptoms such as burning when urinating, difficulty emptying the bladder or bleeding, the disease may already be in advanced stages.“
An enemy difficult to prevent
To add further complexity, prostate cancer cannot yet be definitively prevented. While leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco can reduce the risk, the main risk factors are older age, family history, and genetics.
“We know that a diet high in fats and proteins of animal origin can increase the risk of developing this type of cancer,” said Dr. Huante Pérez. “Therefore, it is important to maintain a balanced diet and consult with a doctor to understand the specific risks of each patient.”
Early Detection: The Key to Survival
Despite the lack of prevention methods, early detection remains the best weapon against prostate cancer. Starting at age 45, all men should visit the urologist at least once a year for a digital rectal exam and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.
In the case of men with family members with a history of prostate cancer, consultations should begin after age 40.
“If detected early, prostate cancer is highly curable,” said Dr. Huante Pérez. “There are various treatments available, such as surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, which can be very effective if applied in the early stages of the disease.”
