German Chancellor Scholz: Germany will toughen punishment for Islamist attacks
Germany will toughen penalties for Islamist attacks, as well as politically motivated attacks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced this, reports RIA News.
“Criminals and terrorists have no place here. In such cases, Germany’s interests in security outweigh the criminal’s interests in protection,” he said.
On May 17, Alternative for Germany (AfD) MP Martin Schmidt was injured by a glass ashtray. The alleged perpetrator is a 52-year-old man who said he “acted out of political animosity.” He considered himself a supporter of left-wing ideas.
On June 5, in the same Mannheim, an unknown person with a knife attacked a member of the AfD. Police confirmed the incident and began an investigation. AfD officials say the attacker was a “left-wing extremist.”
