The Swiss Academy of Sciences in Bern announced Thursday that after two years of hot summers and low snowfall, the layer of permafrost continues to retreat in many parts of Switzerland.
The academy reported that, since October 2022, the weather has become exceptionally warm in Switzerland, with the air temperature rising by 1.5 to 1.9 degrees Celsius above the long-term average from 1991 to 2010. Moreover, winter started late in In the highlands, snowfall was below average.
These observations apply to the so-called water year, which lasts from October to September of the following year so that conclusions about rainfall are made.
The current water year lasts until September, but it is already clear that in the summer of 2023, the active layer, the part of the Earth that melts in the warmer months, in the Swiss permafrost reached or approached the previous year’s record levels.
