Since the launch of Star Wars Battlefront and Overwatch, various European organizations have tried to completely block loot boxes, due to the dangers they represent to an underage audience. Now, It has been revealed that Spain is in the process of passing a law that will eliminate loot boxes in EA Sport FC 24.
According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the draft organic law for the protection of minors in digital environments has been approved in the first round. This new standard aims to create safe environments for children and adolescents, and guarantee greater safety among minors during their access to video games. In this project, a clear restriction on loot boxes has been included.. This is what was said about it:
“The Ministry of Consumer Affairs wants to focus on the risks and negative impact that these “loot boxes” have on people who play video games, especially the youngest ones. According to the General Directorate of Gambling Regulation (DGOJ), promoter of this measure, loot boxes are mechanisms whose nature and design often represent the first contact by minors with games of chance in exchange for money. , and this may represent a “normalization” of this type of products.”
According to this organization, 24% of users between 15 and 17 years old have bought a loot box in the last year. One of the reasons why attempts have been made to prohibit this monetization system is that it is considered a first approach to gambling for minors.
However, this decision will not come into force immediately, since it is part of the Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, so there is still some time before we see this in progress. On related topics, the document reveals that EA encourages users to spend in loot boxes. Likewise, sue Take-Two for loot boxes.
Author’s Note:
Loot boxes are an essential part of the monetization system of some games, and have proven to be a success. Spain is not the first country to try to ban these items, and it probably will not be the last.
