The future of Stellantis’ Italian production facilities continues to be discussed. Particularly after Carlos TavaresCEO of the Italian-French group, visited the Melfi plant yesterday: in recent weeks the Portuguese manager has had different moments of dialogue with the unions precisely regarding the future of the company’s Italian production, a confrontation that Tavares himself defined “constructive and productive in a spirit of mutual respect”.
Full operation of the Italian plants
As for the forecasts linked to the group’s Italian production, Tavares said he was optimistic. “I was asked to indicate the prospects of Italian factories to 2030, we went even further, and we guaranteed that there will be full operation for everyone, there’s no problem”, his words reported by Ansa. After expressing appreciation towards the unions, composed to say about him by “mature and responsible people”, the CEO of Stellantis focused on the Melfi plant: in this sense, the forecast is to reach the target of 250,000/260,000 cars assembled in 2026 when all five new models will be in production, while the number of workers it will depend not only on Chinese competitiveness but also on how much it will be necessary to reduce costs to address it.
Stellantis and production in Melfi
“Everyone in Melfi is doing an incredible, creative job. In 2025 we will be at highest levels of quality. This factory has the ability to make global-level products, there are cost improvements, and there are many ideas – added Tavares – If Europe continues to invite Chinese homes, we have no choice but to compete. In Melfi everyone understands that the competition will be tough, but the only way to move forward is to work together, at the same speed and in the same direction”.
Tavares on incentives
Finally, the Portuguese manager also focused on incentives and sensational boom recorded by electric cars: the funds intended for incentives for the purchase of EVs, approximately 200 million euros, were in fact exhausted in 9 hours. “Something strange happened, we were surprised too. Those in charge are investigating – concluded Tavares – We are trying to understand what triggered this anomalous phenomenon, but at the moment we do not have any type of certain indication to give an explanation to what happened.”
