Germany is a team with a wide range of excellent players and if we take a look at the eleven they have left out of their squad for the Euro Cup it confirms this even more. Up to four Champions League finalist players who are starters for Borussia Dortmund have been left off the list. Players like Goretzka or Gnabry, important in Bayern, will not travel to a European Championship in which Alemani plays the role of host.
Stefan Ortega has completed a great season with Manchester City, a goalkeeper that very few knew and that many, at the end of the season, asked for a place in Euro 2024. However, Germany has Ter Stegen and Neuer in its ranks , two of the best goalkeepers currently in the soccer bubble.
The Milan defender has played 2,164 minutes in 31 games this season. His advantage of being able to play as a center back and right back meant that there were possibilities to take him to the European Championship. Finally Nagelsmann decided to leave him out of the squad.
After a great season at Borussia Dortmund and being a finalist in the Champions League at Wembley, Mats Hummels looked forward to participating with his country in the Euro Cup but finally his age penalized him and he was on the verge of being part of Nagelsmann’s team.
His 31 games for Borussia Dortmund this season have not been enough to bring him to the national team. It has not been his state of form either since in the last few days and before the final at Wembley, he has had something to talk about. The center-back weighs approximately 100 kilos and this has been one of the reasons why it was decided not to call him up.
A fast player with arrival. Robin Gosens has not been called up by Nagelsmann despite his incredible season with Unión Berlin. The German has been left out of it, having played both as a full-back and as a left winger throughout the course in which he has scored seven goals and three assists.
At 30 years old, it seemed to be his season, however, the wide range of young and talented footballers in the German midfield has hurt Emre Can, who dreamed of playing in what could have been the last Euro Cup of his career. Also, the decision that Toni Kroos was called up has closed more than one door for him to belong to the German national team squad this summer.
One of the great new additions to the German squad for the Euro Cup has been Goretzka. The Bayern Munich interior has not been called up by Nagelsmann to play Euro 2024 in his country. The great talent of the young players has hit the table and players like Goreztka or Emre Can with experience in these competitions have not been included in the German coach’s list.
Possibly a surprise to many after his great campaign leading the Signal Iduna Park midfield. Brandt, who had been key this season for Borussia Dortmund in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League, was left out of the squad for the Euro Cup.
It is true that he has not had a great role in Bayern Munich in recent months, not to mention throughout the entire season, but it was surprising that Nagelsmann did not count on him for the Euro Cup. Gnabry has only scored five goals in 20 games he has played, something insufficient to take him to Euro 2024.
One of the most important players in Borrusia Dortmund’s attack has not been called up either. Adeyemi, who was aiming to be called up to the national team, in the end has not been called up to play in the European Championship with his country. His few goals throughout the season are insufficient to carry him and for him to belong to the German team in the Euro Cup.
Timo Werner is one of those forwards who no longer shine in the way they were used to. The German striker who returned to Leipzig has once again disappointed at Tottenham and only has four goals all season. Nagelsmann was clear that the German team needed a striker with a goal and as the data shows, Werner is not it.
This would be the alignment of the “not called up” (4-3-3)
Goalie: Stefan Ortega
Defenses: Thiaw, Hummels, Süle, Gosens
Midfielders: Emre Can, Goretzka, Brandt
Forwards: Adeyemi, Gnabry and Werner
