Korean mosquito (Aedes koreicus)
A new species of tiger mosquito in Rome, more annoying, more aggressive and more dangerous than the classic ones. This is the Japanese variety, a variety which – thanks to the microclimate that is occurring in Rome – is claiming “victims” in bursts in the Capital: not lethal but, if it stings in the eye area, it risks sending citizens to the hospital with strong swelling around the eye up to the cheekbone.
After the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the Korean mosquito (Aedes koreicus), another exotic species has been found: the Japanese mosquito (Aedes japonicus japonicus).
The alarm starts from Rome
In the capital in recent days the red alert has gone off due to the many visits to emergency rooms due to inexplicable swelling and red eyes up to the cheekbones. Nothing lethal, but certainly very annoying. The doctors’ recommendation, when you feel severe itching, is to rinse with plenty of cold water and if the situation does not return to normal, go to hospital.
Its biology
Its biology is similar to the other two Aedes species mentioned here: diurnal, harasses, stings humans and lays eggs resistant to the winter cold; in fact it is present in European countries with a much harsher climate than the Italian one, such as Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary. With these premises, we can hypothesize a possible expansion into other areas of central Italy. It is a potential carrier of bacterial load that causes strong reactions on the skin. “Urticaria Populosa” is a hypersensitivity reaction that presents with skin irritation following the bite of the Japanese mosquito.
The expert
“With such a rainy May – explains Professor Ronchi, from the Biology department – the egg-laying has been fueled and in the next few hours the hatching will arrive with a truly impressive peak of new mosquitoes. The climate in Rome, therefore , acts as an incubator for new borns. We therefore need to pay more attention to prevention.”
The advices
Eliminate all containers that can accumulate water even in small quantities, such as buckets in vegetable gardens and gardens, and remember to always keep them upside down; Avoid stagnation of water in the saucers or empty them at least once a week: the mosquito eggs do not develop and the larvae are eliminated; put fish in fountains and outdoor tanks: they feed on mosquito larvae; Use mosquito nets on the windows. The air conditioning also keeps mosquitoes away.
The disfenstations
Faced with this new assault by samurai mosquitoes, the Municipality has intensified disinfestation with greater attention on cemeteries and parks. Invitations have also gone out to private condominiums to increase reclamation. The war on the last sting has begun.
