A recent interview published by Game Informer reveals a particular anecdote linked to the development of Shadows of the Damnedaccording to which Shinji Mikami and Suda51 were actually “scolded” by Electronic Arts for their thoughts on Shadows of the Damned.
The game, in fact, is a rather bizarre title: recently, the authors defined its plot as “like Super Mario, but in hell”, just to give an idea of the strangeness, and in fact its style above the Righe was quite particular, despite having been released in a period in which productions of this type were perhaps more frequent even by large labels.
It seems that the publisher Electronic Arts, in particular, did not fully appreciate the strange “rock and roll horror” style that the authors were imparting, complete with a rather abrupt confrontation between production and developers.
The friction between the creatives and the publisher resulted in a clash
In the interview, Suda51 says that he has many fond memories of the period of work on Shadows of the Damned, but in particular he was struck by a meeting with EA.
“We definitely had a lot of friction with EA, we often discussed a lot of aspects and ideas about the game and we also had to make quite a few compromises, both on our part and on their part”, said the author of Killer 7 and No More Heroes.
Then he also recounts a particular episode: “We were called to Los Angeles by EA once, and we found ourselves in front of like ten people in a hotel suite, sitting at a large table. When we entered, we were shocked. They really scolded usessentially asking ourselves what the hell are you trying to do?“.
A strange situation even for two seasoned characters like Goichi and Mikami, who didn’t expect a direct clash like this. Despite this, it doesn’t seem like there was much interference in the creative process, considering the general strangeness that characterizes the game.
This will also be recovered and relaunched soon to the modern audience, given that Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, the remastered version, has been announced.
