Grossi announced a violation of all seven pillars of IAEA nuclear protection at Zaporozhye NPP
All seven pillars of IAEA nuclear and physical protection at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) are partially or completely violated, said the organization’s general director Rafael Grossi.
According to him, this is due to frequent attacks on the station and regular power outages.
The situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains unstable
Grossi in 2023 proposed five principles for ensuring the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, including not allowing attacks on the plant, not placing heavy weapons and military personnel there, and not endangering the plant’s energy supply.
Russia announced increased pressure from the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Zaporizhzhya NPP
At the end of May, the head of the Rosatom state corporation, Alexey Likhachev, said that the pressure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the Zaporizhzhya NPP is growing.
“We can say there is a noticeable increase in the number of unmanned aerial vehicles in the air,” he said, adding that most drones have been neutralized.
Grossi also recalled that in April there were several drone attacks at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, including on one of the reactors. According to him, this episode brought him to the UN Security Council. “I would describe the situation as very fragile,” he assessed.
Zaporozhye NPP was proposed to be protected by creating a sanitary zone
According to the chairman of the Zaporozhye public movement “We are together with Russia” Vladimir Rogov, in order to protect Energodar and the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant from shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it is necessary to create a sanitary zone. He believes that it should pass along the right bank of the Dnieper.
“In order for it to exist, it is necessary to clear the right bank of the Dnieper from the Nazis, where they carry out shelling in Nikopol, Tomakovka, and Manganets,” Rogov added.
A potential accident at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant was compared to the Chernobyl disaster
The consequences of the accident at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant will be comparable to the Chernobyl disaster, warned the head of the Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops (RKhBZ) Igor Kirillov.
He noted that in the event of an emergency, radiation would reach France and Germany, and 21 days after the incident – to the United States. According to Kirillov, a situation similar to Chernobyl will occur in three days after the accident at the Zaporizhia NPP.
He also denied Washington’s statement that the accident at the Zaporizhia NPP will not bring any harm to Europe.
