L’AI is increasingly central to the world of video games and big companies are pushing more and more in that direction. Specifically, rumors say that Microsoft wants to upgrade the next one Xbox with an AI accelerator, also known as NPU, Neural Processing Unit.
Jez Corden of WindowsCentral claimed to have received information from reliable sources, in a newly published article. According to the journalist, this NPU inside Microsoft’s upcoming hardware will be able to perform some AI-related tasks, including Auto SR – Microsoft’s resolution upscaling technology.
Corden’s words on Xbox AI
“Reliable sources tell us that the next Xbox will have an NPU to handle some AI tasks, like Auto Super Resolution, for example, without taking anything away from the CPU or GPU,” Corden writes. “There next Xbox it will also have a form of Copilot, which will offer guidance in the game without having to resort to websites like ours (RIP Windows Central). However, the amount of people who are likely to use these tools on Xbox is minimal compared to the default on iOS or Android.”
Although Corden initially said that the NPU will come from Qualcomm, he later clarified that the producer it is not yet known. “The manufacturer is not known at the moment, but it is most likely AMD,” he added.
Previously it had been discussed that the AI of the next Xbox will be used to automate certain steps, such as obtaining refunds. However, it is not known whether this function is the same one that Corden describes.
