The Advisory Council of the Emirate of Sharjah stated that climate change is not just an environmental challenge, but rather constitutes an opportunity to adopt policies and procedures that contribute to achieving sustainable development, while specialists in environmental affairs stressed the importance of the vital role of innovation and technology in improving the efficiency of resource use and reducing environmental impact.
This came during a symposium held by the “Sharjah Consultant”, the day before yesterday, entitled “Climate change in terms of preparation, opportunities and benefit”, as part of its community programs within the framework of its work for the first regular session of the 11th legislative term, in the presence of the Speaker of the Council, Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, and the Secretary General of the Council, Ahmed Saeed Al-Jarwan.
Al Nuaimi stressed the importance of the Council’s role in community awareness, by raising issues that address environmental challenges and promote sustainability, pointing out that climate change represents an opportunity to adopt policies and procedures that contribute to achieving sustainable development. He called for concerted efforts between various governmental and private sectors, pointing out the importance of awareness and education on environmental and climate issues, to achieve sustainable strategic goals.
In turn, expert in sustainable development and environmental protection, Dr. Rashid Muhammad Karkin, said that the crucial element that can help achieve the goals of sustainable development is “inclusiveness” without excluding anyone, as the main focus of sustainable development is on humans.
He stressed the need to integrate sustainable development goals and governance as main criteria in the selection, design, implementation and operation phase of projects.
Kerkin stressed the importance of scientific research and its results in achieving sustainable development, noting that it plays a vital role in developing innovative solutions to environmental, economic and social challenges.
For her part, Engineer Shaima Al-Ali, from the Department of Studies, Research and Development at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted “how to maintain a balance between human use of resources and environmental protection,” pointing out that innovation and technology play an important role in improving the efficiency of resource use and reducing environmental impact. .
Al-Ali stressed the need for cooperation between government, private and community agencies to achieve sustainability goals.
