Through the pages of the PlayStation Blog, Limited Run Games has revealed the release date of Tombi! Special Edition, the re-edition of the great classic released way back in 1997 on PS1. Will be available on PS5 starting August 1st. It is not clear whether the release date will be the same for the PC and Nintendo Switch versions, although we know for sure that the PS4 one will be published later.
We also point out that the game is coming for now advertised as “Tomba! Special Edition”. This is because the title “Tombi!” it was adopted only for the European market, probably because the original one was considered unsuitable for Italy at the time. It is unclear whether this difference will also be maintained for this re-release. For example, the official Steam page lists the name “Tomba!”.
The news of the re-release of Tombi!
As previously revealed, the first Tombi! will return to PC and console not in the form of a remaster or a remake, but rather through one conversion made with the Carbon Enginea proprietary emulation software from Limited Run Games specifically designed to revive great classics of the past on today’s platforms and thanks to which developers can add support for Trophies and achievements, change the assignment of inputs, modify elements such as the game and more.
Tokura Fujiwara and Fujita Harumi, respectively director and composer of the original game, were involved in the project, which, pending precise details on the matter, suggests a deeper work than a simple 1:1 conversion.
From the Steam page we learn that the game now supports the function to save the game at any time, the rewind of the action, an option to support analog sticks, as well as a museum mode with never-seen documents, high-resolution artwork and various promotional material, a remastered soundtrack and an interview with the aforementioned Fujiwara.
