Covid infections and deaths decreasing in Italy. In the last week, from 16 to 22 May, the new positives were 862 compared to 923 in the week of 9-15 May. There were 8 new deaths, compared to 17 in the previous 7 days. This is reported in the weekly update published on the Ministry of Health website, the first no longer communicated in the press. The number of swabs carried out decreased: 87,983, compared to 94,027 from 9-15 May. The positivity rate is stable at 1%. At the regional level, the 203 new cases in Lazio stand out (last week there were 118), with 1 death (zero in the previous 7 days).
Figures are decreasing again in Lombardy, which last week showed clearly rising numbers: new cases dropped from 324 to 208, deaths from 11 to 3.
Rt and hospitalizations stable in the last week
In the period 16-22 May the incidence at a national level it is equal to 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants, “essentially stable compared to the previous week (2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants from 9 to 15 May)”, reads the report. However, “there is a slight increase in some autonomous regions/provinces. The highest incidence was reported in the Lazio region (4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Basilicata, Marche, Molise and Valle d’Aosta”, where “no new cases were reported”.Rt calculated with data updated to May 22nd, based on cases with hospitalization, as of May 14th is below the epidemic threshold, equal to 0.9 (0.73-1.09), stable compared to the previous week (Rt 0.93 on May 7, 0.75-1.13). The rate of reinfections is around 43%, stable.
On the hospitalization front, “as of May 22, the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 0.9% (579 hospitalized), stable compared to the previous week (0.9% as of May 15). The occupancy of hospital workers was also stable. beds in intensive care, equal to 0.3% (27 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (0.3% on May 15)”. The report specifies that “no new admissions to intensive care were recorded in the week of observation”.
