Driver guilty of killing 18 children in South Africa crash to be sentenced

Pongola, South Africa.- Sibusiso Siyaya, 29, has been found guilty of 20 counts of murderreckless and negligent driving, as well as failure to comply with the obligations of a driver after a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of 18 children and two adults.

Siyaya will be sentenced soon. The fatal accident occurred in September 2022 when the truck Siyaya collided head-on with a bakkie carrying schoolchildren.

The accident, captured by a camera installed in the driver’s vehicle, showed how Siyaya violated traffic rules while driving in the opposite lane for approximately 1.2 kilometers.

Among the fatalities, the shock is palpable. Nonhlanhla Ntshangase, one of the affected mothers lost her three children in the accident and is still in shock from the tragedy.

The government has promised to widen the highway to improve road safety in the area, but so far, work has not started, leaving the community in a state of vulnerability and sadness as they wait for justice to be done and measures to be taken to avoid future accidents.
