The developers of Ascendant Studiosauthors of Immortals of Aveumthey revealed that they had started work on a new gameagain created with the help of Unreal Engine 5.
The confirmation came via a post on the studio’s official website, published on the occasion of the announcement of the entry of Immortals of Aveum into the PC and Xbox Game Pass catalog in the next few days. For the moment the team has not revealed too much, limiting itself to confirming that work has begun with Unreal Engine 5.2, with the hope of publishing the title “for version 5.3 or beyond” of the Epic Games engine.
“We have already started working on our next project in Unreal Engine 5.2 and hope to publish it in UE 5.3 or beyond!”, the message from the studio.
The flop of Immortals of Aveum and the numerous staff cuts
Ascendant Studios is a development studio located in San Rafael, California, founded by Bret Robbins, former creative director of EA and Sledgehammer Games, together with other industry veterans. The studio’s first work was Immortals of Aveum, published last August 22 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in partnership with Electronic Arts.
Despite some indisputable qualities, the game did not fully convince the public and critics (by the way, here is our review of Immortals of Aveum). At launch the game registered sales far below the studio’s target, so much so that a few weeks later the company fired half the development team. In an interview published in November, Robbins explained that the main cause of the game’s commercial flop was the release period chosen for the publication, which was far too crowded with great depth and media appeal, such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Armored Core 6, in a year already too abundant in terms of games.
According to a Polygon report, there were last month further staff cutswhich, if confirmed, means that the staff working on the new Ascendant Studios project is much smaller than that of Immortals of Aveum, at least for the moment.
